20世纪30年代的巴西南部战火连连。有一支军队正在搜寻一个名为朗皮奥的人，他擅自逃离，逍遥法外，居住在巴西南部。于是厄运降临到了巴西南部一个叫玛丽亚的平凡女人身上。她未能逃脱战乱的魔爪，家庭被战争破坏得四分五裂，父母在战乱中被军队杀死。于是，无所依托的玛丽亚嫁给了菲利普。不久后，玛丽亚对菲利普的侄子渐渐暗生情愫。被嫉妒心极强的菲利普发现后怒火中烧，他决定与玛丽亚离婚并把孤苦伶仃的她赶出家门。...
