在纽约华埠，有一种边缘职业，烟贩子。主人公李元便是如此。三个月前，李元花费高额代价通过某种途径从大陆来到美国，现今寄居在华埠。为了还清债务，李元遵循蛇头阿铨的安排，他游走在法律边缘，通过贩卖走私香烟以维持生存。异国他乡，不会说英文，没有学历也不愿意去洗盘子干脏活的李元逐步意识到“西渡淘金”似乎只是一场梦，梦的真相是华埠的繁华与奚落。一场涉及到酒吧歌手Angela的案子将他卷进华埠更不为人知的世界。随着对Angela的深入了解，一个隐藏在平静之下的巨大陷阱等待着李元……...
