During an era of civil wars, in the 7th year of Tenso, Yoshimoto Imagawa (今川义元)was overthrown by Oda Nobunaga (织田信长) with the help of Ieyasu Tokugawa(德川家康). Ieyasu's wife, Lady Tsukiyama, was of the ruined Imagawa clan. She was basically abandoned by Ieyasu lest his fealty with Oda Nobunaga be doubted. Ieyasu's son, half Tokugawa & half Imagawa, was married to Oda's first daughter Tokumine Gozen, to further assure Oda that there would be no attempt at revenge over the downfall of the Imagawa clan. This scenario from history is the starting point for Daisuke Ito's Conspirator (Hangyakuji, Toei, 1961), from a script by Jiro Osaraji. This is the chronicle of the tragic life and anguish of a young lord in the Warring Clans’ era. Young lord Saburo Nobuyasu struggles to find comfort in life. His arranged marriage to Tokuhime, daughter of one-time family enemy Oda Nobunaga, provides little happiness. His manipulative mother adds further complications through her constant interference and attempts at defeating the Oda family. A true classic in the historical sense, this is a superb film with deep insight into the culture of old Japan. At that time it was common for erstwhile enemies to form alliances through marriage. While it might seem a good idea at the time, the result is often tragic.
