On first glance, this is nothing else than a thriller with horror film elements. It is 1945. Children who have been liberated from a Nazi concentration camp are left at God’s mercy in an abandoned palace in a forest, without food and water. However, the true nightmare only starts when the building is besieged by hungry wild wolf dogs that were used to guard the camp. Sounds like a category B film, doesn’t it? But don’t be fooled!
Under the cover of an impressive genre film, a psychological story with beautiful undercurrents unfolds – a story about overcoming the victim complex which still runs in the blood of various nations that have been victims of the Holocaust and the deportations. These children here, who have been robbed of everything and of whom quite a few have been infected by the evil they have suffered, find their humanity, throw away their victim’s mentality together with their camp uniform and head into the future, heads high.
Werewolf won the Best Director and the Best Music awards at the Polish National Film Festival. The dogs did not receive any awards. Which is unfair. We hope they were at least given tasty bones for their impressive role performances.
