Two years in the making, The Planet is an epic overview of the Earth at this moment, and an attempt to find answers about the alarming global changes that many say are already in motion. The Planet differs in style from other recent films of similar theme. It uses some of the poetic, visual strategies of Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi to allow viewers a chance to reflect on patterns of human and natural existence both up close, and then from a sweeping vantage point. The sheer visual impact of the film offers a new perspective even to those who have developed an alienated attitude to the subject. The film features 29 experts, from Kenya to Greenland, including professors, water distributors, directors, entrepreneurs and a wildlife photographer, to explain what is happening to our planet. Moving beyond listing facts about the greenhouse effect, it demonstrates how fast our world now changes. As a result of globalisation, for the first time in human history, what we do at home has effects on the ecosystem on the other side of the world. The film ultimately makes the point that in order to survive on the one planet we have, we have no choice but to change our mentality. It is impossible to remain neutral to the truths presented in The Planet, and the visual beauty of it; viewers will emerge moved to a new level of understanding and, hopefully, action.
