Over twenty years in the making, Shadow of Afghanistan is a remarkable documentary film depicting the epic story of Afghanistan: the resilience and tactical determination of its people; the Cold War origins of anti-American feeling; and the origins of the Taliban, al-Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden.
Seen through the eyes of an Afghan warrior and independent journalists, two of whom died while making it, Shadow of Afghanistan profiles a people forever determined to survive and be free. Over two decades, the film tracks the Soviet occupation, the exile of two million refugees, a violent civil war, the fatal alliance of the Taliban with al-Qaeda, the United States invasion, as well as attempts to form and maintain a national government after the U.S. invasion following the September 11 attacks. An in-depth look at the tragic history of a war-torn land and its relationship to today's headlines, the movie also depicts the story of journalists putting their lives on the line to uncover the complex truth surrounding decades of betrayal.
