芝露自从跟随动物学家的母亲，在非洲森林居住，研究如何保护大猩猩。一次意外，芝露母亲误被猎人所杀，剩下芝露与小猩猩祖相依为命。芝露长大后继承母亲保护大猩猩的志愿，而同时长大的祖亦变得巨大有力，令人望而生畏。二人本来和平相处；一日，猎人见到祖身型庞大，有意捉牠研究，同行者更想将牠卖到城里去。芝露为了避免猎人伤害祖，决定将祖交予城中的动物保护协会。当祖踏进城市，混身不自在，及后遇上当年杀死祖至亲的猎人，祖更是发狂。祖奋力发抗，芝露知道祖的心意，决定协助祖一起返回森林，重过生活。...
